Types of LED Display Technologies

We often add DIP, SMD, GOB, COB and other words in front of some LED display or LED display module, some readers may have heard of them belonging to a kind of LED encapsulation technology, but I believe that not many people understand its specific meaning and role. Next, we introduce one by one.

DIP

DIP LED packaging technology produced by the LED display is mainly used in a number of monochrome LED Display or larger models (such as P10, P16, etc.) on the full-color LED display. The LED display encapsulated by DIP technology has the advantages of long life, high brightness, and long viewing distance.

SMD

SMD is the abbreviation of “Surface Mounted Devices”, which can be regarded as the advanced version of DIP. First, its lamp beads become smaller, luminous brightness more uniform, and secondly, SMD LED technology package can produce a smaller model of LED display.

Therefore, if we look carefully, we will find that from P1-P8 models of LED display, basically are made using SMD packaging technology. And P10 or P10 or more models, although there may be part of the use of SMD technology packaging, but more is the use of DIP technology packaging.

GOB

GOB is the abbreviation of “Glue On Board”, in fact, it is through a kind of high transparent resin on the surface of SMD LED module coated with a layer of film. However, due to the increased cost of GOB resin, the price is relatively high, and it is mainly used in some high-end rental and commercial displays.

IMD

IMD is the abbreviation of “Integrated Matrix Devices”, also known as all-in-one LED packaging technology, usually in multiples of 2 for the packaging of LED lamp beads. The common IMD on the market is mainly 2-in-1 package and 4-in-1 package.

It not only integrates the low cost of SMD packaging, color consistency and other advantages, but also draws on the protective ability of COB, so IMD LED packaging technology is a very perfect LED packaging technology. What is more pleasing is that IMD also has the ability to encapsulate LED beads with a pitch between 0.6-0.9mm, and its encapsulation cost is lower than that of COB, so if you want to experience a small-sized LED display, IMD is also a good choice.

COB is the abbreviation of “Chip on Board”, which is a way to directly weld the LED chip on the PCB substrate. It and SMD packaging technology is the biggest difference is that it can better shorten the distance between the pixels, to achieve the pixel to pixel less than 1mm, we see on the market P0.9, P0.6 micro LED display, are made using the COB process. Due to its extremely expensive price, no LED display manufacturer has yet been able to manufacture COB LED displays in large quantities.

COG is the abbreviation of “Chip on Glass”, which looks very similar to COB. In fact, the operation of the two is also very similar, only the fixed PCB board replaced by a thinner and more transparent glass substrate, the point pitch can again break through to reach 0.1mm below, is also one of the ways to produce micro LED.

  • DIP LED packaging technology: applicable to LED display with pixel pitch of 10mm and above.

  • GOB LED packaging technology: applicable to the pixel pitch between 1-10mm LED display.

Rental LED Display and Fixed LED Display

Rental LED Display

Rental LED display is a kind of detachable and movable LED display suitable for weddings, stages, concerts and other scenes. It is not only free to adjust the size, but also easy to set up. When the event is over, it can be disassembled and put into the LED air box to be moved to the next event.

Fixed LED display

It has obvious opposite characteristics to the rental LED display that can be flexibly dismantled, so the two are often put together and mentioned. Fixed LED display is when we install it does not need to move again, so it is mostly used in large outdoor advertising, highway signs and other scenes. Fixed LED display is divided into indoor fixed and outdoor fixed.

Indoor fixed LED display usually use simple cabinet without waterproof, outdoor fixed LED display will be replaced with standard waterproof cabinet because of waterproof, heat dissipation and other issues to be considered.

Single LED display and full color LED display

Single color LED display

The main performance can only show a color of the LED display, generally using DIP packaging technology. Common colors are: red, blue, white, green, can only display simple text and time, commonly used in door display, parking lot signs and other application scenarios.

Full Color LED Display

Unlike single-color, full-color LED display is generally produced using SMD packaging technology (a small part of the use of DIP), due to each part of the simultaneous inclusion of red, green, blue three different LED beads, so it can display a variety of text, pictures, video and other content.

Its rich display effect makes it has a very wide range of applications, such as some shopping malls, supermarkets, subway stations, high-speed rail stations and other places have its figure.

Indoor LED Display and Outdoor LED Display

Transparent LED display
